Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

HIPAA DC......We Comply! The opportunities presented by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) hold great promise for improving health care delivery across affected District Government operations. The District of Columbia, through the Executive Sponsorship of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Children, Youth, Families, and Elders (DMCYFE), is committed to successfully achieving HIPAA Compliance, which will afford District residents greater control over their health care and heath records, and access to District officials dedicated to Health Care Privacy and Confidentiality.

HIPAA also provides the District's health care delivery system administrative and legislative authority to implement benefits available to a Public Health Authority, uniformity in information and sharing among social services entities, and efficiencies in the provision of services.

The District of Columbia Department of Health, Medical Assistance Administration (MAA), held a Healthcare Provider Summit on August 21, 2003. The Summit addressed the implementation and compliance of HIPAA requirements for transaction processing of DC Medicaid Providers by October 16, 2003. If you are a DC Medicaid provider and you missed the summit, or want to review the materials, we have recorded the presentations. The healthcare service and financial impact implications are too severe for you not to be informed on DC HIPAA requirements.
